750kV Ultra-High Voltage Substation Project: Heavy Gantry Steel Structures Fabricated for the Taklamakan Desert Super Grid

Project Overview

Project Name: Qiemo (Altyn) 750kV Substation Infrastructure Project (A core node of the Hotan–Minfeng–Qiemo–Ruoqiang 750kV UHV Transmission & Substation Mega Project)

Voltage Level: 750kV Ultra-High Voltage / Extra-High Voltage (UHV/EHV)

Structure Type: Heavy-Duty Substation Steel Structures, Main Gantry Frames, Lightning Rod Towers, and HGIS Equipment Support Stands

Project Environment: Taklamakan Desert ("The Sea of Death"), Xinjiang, China (Extreme Arid, Severe Sandstorms, and Intense Wind Loads)

Fabricator & Supplier: Qingdao Best Steel Structure Co., Ltd. (QDBESTTOWER)

Project Background & World-Class Challenges

Qingdao Best Steel Structure Co., Ltd. successfully accomplished the professional detailing, precision manufacturing, and complete batch supply of the 750kV substation steel structures for the Qiemo 750kV Substation.

As a grand finale project of the massive 750kV power ring network encircling the Tarim Basin, this National 14th Five-Year Power Development Plan priority project represents one of the largest and most challenging 750kV ultra-high voltage (UHV) ring grid initiatives globally.

The Qiemo (Altyn) Substation is a vital node of this network and stands as one of the few elite 750kV HGIS (Hybrid Gas Insulated Switchgear) substations. The entire transmission and substation line stretches across the center of the Taklamakan Desert, widely known as the "Sea of Death."

Engineering & Environmental Endurance Highlights

Battling the "Sea of Death" Environment: The project site experiences some of the harshest climatic conditions on earth, with an average annual precipitation of only 50mm, an evaporation rate exceeding 2500mm, and more than 100 severe sandstorm days per year. Under extreme weather, howling desert winds can whip up massive sand walls meters high. Our 750kV gantry frames and heavy steel structures were custom-engineered to endure these massive dynamic wind shear forces and severe sand erosion without structural deformation.

Military-Grade Precision for 750kV HGIS Systems: Heavy UHV gantry structures demand exceptionally tight dimensional tolerances to ensure the safety of ultra-high voltage air clearances and HGIS equipment layout. Our manufacturing plant utilized advanced CNC processing and rigorous quality controls to achieve zero-error alignment for the massive steel columns and trusses.

Heavy-Duty Hot-Dip Galvanizing for Desert Corrosion: Although deserts are dry, the severe friction from blowing sand particles requires superior surface hardness and anti-corrosion protection. All structural steel components underwent a premium hot-dip galvanizing process inside our advanced facility, strictly conforming to ISO 1461 / ASTM A123 standards. The thick, uniform zinc layer guarantees a maintenance-free service life of over 50 years under extreme UV exposure and sand abrasion.

100% Pre-Assembly Quality Assurance: Transporting heavy materials into the deep desert is incredibly demanding; any onsite error would be catastrophic. To ensure a seamless field erection by the construction crews, a 100% full-scale trial assembly of the massive 750kV gantry structures was performed at our factory before dispatch, guaranteeing perfect hole alignment and match-marking.
