Fabricator & Supplier: Qingdao Best Steel Structure Co., Ltd. (QDBESTOWER)

Project Background & Challenging Environment

Qingdao Best Steel Structure Co., Ltd. successfully manufactured and delivered the 35kV overhead transmission lattice towers for the State Power Investment Corporation (SPIC) Hubei Yuntaihuang Wind Farm.

This mega renewable energy project features a total capacity of 180MW, utilizing 82 wind turbines to inject approximately 300 million kWh of clean electricity into the grid annually. However, the wind farm is situated atop the rugged Yuntaihuang mountain ridge at an extreme altitude of 2,056 meters, presenting severe challenges including unpredictable mountain climates, dense fog, freezing ice loads, and steep, perilous geography.

Logistics Overcoming & Manufacturing Highlights

Exceptional Mountain Logistics & Delivery: Due to the steep terrain and narrow mountain tracks, standard heavy trucks could not reach the summit. To secure the project timeline, our team meticulously coordinated a secondary transport and transshipment strategy. All steel tower components were carefully transferred to specialized, nimble transport vehicles and successfully hauled to the mountaintop cargo yard. Our extraordinary logistical resilience earned high praise and official recognition from the project owner (SPIC).

High-Altitude Wind & Ice Load Optimization: High-altitude mountain ridges experience violent wind shear and extreme winter icing. Our engineering team enhanced the structural design of the 35kV lattice towers, upgrading the steel thickness and reinforcement plates to endure massive dynamic wind loads and heavy ice coatings without structural fatigue.

Premium Steel & Advanced Hot-Dip Galvanization: The towers were fabricated using high-strength structural steel (grades Q355B/Q420B, matching ASTM A572 / EN 10025 standards). To resist the constant moisture, dense mountain fog, and corrosive atmospheric conditions at 2,056m, all components underwent heavy hot-dip galvanizing in compliance with ISO 1461 / ASTM A123 to ensure a maintenance-free lifespan of 50+ years.

100% Pre-Assembly Trial: To eliminate any risk of installation errors on the remote mountain peak where resources were extremely limited, a 100% full-scale trial assembly of the prototype towers was performed at our factory. This ensured flawless hole alignment and match-marking, significantly accelerating the onsite erection speed for the field crews.
